Along with Wright and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Hobson_Richardson\">Henry Hobson Richardson<\/a>, Sullivan is one of &#8220;the recognized trinity of American architecture.&#8221; The phrase &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Form_follows_function\">form follows function<\/a>&#8221; is attributed to him<\/p>\n<p>For Sullivan this was distilled wisdom, an aesthetic credo,<br \/>\nthe single &#8220;rule that shall permit of no exception.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The full quote is:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling workhorse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, <em>form ever follows function<\/em>, and this is the law.
