It can<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">range from an easy utility finish all the way<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">up to the finest of fine polished finishes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">Here is a way to make your shellac finishes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">better and easier to use. This gets a little<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">scientific, but stick with me, it\u2019s worth it in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">the end.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">It is very important to think about the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">solvent used to dissolve the shellac. Most<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">people simply use commercially available<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">\u201cdenatured\u201d alcohol. Denatured alcohol is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">a general alcohol-based solvent used for a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">variety of applications across many<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">industries. Mixed with shellac, it will<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">produce a serviceable finish. However, it has<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">some problems when it comes to shellac.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">First, there is no industry regulation<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">regarding what precisely constitutes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">denatured alcohol. This means that some<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">brands are cut with water to increase their<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">volume, often by as much as 20%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">Second, is that there is no way of knowing<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">what kind of alcohol was used to produce<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">the product. Some brands contain methanol,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">a cheaper, more volatile, and dangerous<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">form of industrial alcohol that can be used<br \/>\nto <\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">bulk up the volume of solvent. This<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">inconsistency makes it difficult to predict<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">the behavior of the shellac both as it<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">dissolves and as it dries as a finish.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; vertical-align: top; height: 582px;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">In short, denatured alcohol is an<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">unpredictable, dangerous, unhealthy, poor<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">quality solvent for shellac that will make<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">your finish harder to use as well as shorten<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">your life. Don\u2019t worry though; I have a solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">Prior to Prohibition here in the United<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">States, woodworkers would have simply<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">mixed their shellac with a high proof, grain<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">derived alcohol that contained a minimum of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">water. It was only after Prohibition that all<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">of these denaturants were added to make<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">industrial alcohol undrinkable.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">If you\u2019re looking for a pure, consistent<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">supply of high-strength alcohol that<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">doesn\u2019t contain this spectrum of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">chemicals, think about the bottom shelf at<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">your local liquor store.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">Everclear and Diesel are two brands<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">of nearly pure alcohol that contain less<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">than 5% water. They are commercially<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">available in most states and are the perfect<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">solvent for shellac, with no denaturant and<br \/>\na <\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">minimum of water.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">Once you switch to pure alcohol for your<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">shellac you will wonder how you ever got<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">along with denatured alcohol. Pure grain<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">alcohol will dissolve your shellac more<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">smoothly and will build your finish more<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">quickly. So, take a trip to your local liquor<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">store and pick up some solvent, give it a try<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">with shellac, and see what you think when<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif;\">you\u2019ve used a
