{"id":128,"date":"2010-01-21T15:01:56","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T23:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shellac.net\/news\/?p=128"},"modified":"2018-09-08T07:56:45","modified_gmt":"2018-09-08T14:56:45","slug":"shellac-flake-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shellac.net\/news\/shellac-flake-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Shellac Care &#038; Use Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>FYI<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>A word about:<\/em><strong><br \/>\nSHELLAC\u00a0\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Packing&#8221; or &#8220;Blocking&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dewaxed shellac flake when exposed to high heat tends to &#8220;block&#8221; or pack together in small, or occasionally, large chunks or \u2018blocks\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>NOTE:<\/em> Blocking is Not detrimental to the shellac flake.<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you leave a pound dewaxed flake under the weight of other supplies in a closed car trunk on a hot summer day the result can be a SOLID brick.<em> (I won&#8217;t do that again!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Avoid blocking<\/strong>; store shellac flake Sealed Against Moisture in a Cool Dry location <em>(under 70\u00b0F). <\/em>If the flake blocks, wrap larger chunks in cloth or thick plastic sheeting, to keep them from flying all over the room, and reduce them to a manageable size with a hammer or dead blow mallet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We try our best (importing via AIR) to give you only the finest flake and to avoid blocking. We however have little control if product sits in a delivery van or air container on a hot day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>More Hints:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 <strong>Use<\/strong> a high-test denatured alcohol around 10 % denaturants or less. If the label does not say, the MSDS sheet for the brand will have the mixture percentages. \u00a0A 190 Proof Denatured Alcohol has 5% denaturant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 A warm environment will aid the alcohol in dissolving flake.<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><br \/>\nNEVER <\/span>place alcohol or shellac on or near any source of heat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 In a cooler room set the lidded bottle of dissolving shellac flake in a container of Hot (not boiling) water to aid in dissolving. You can pulverize buttons and flake in a coffee grinder or in a blender to speed dissolving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Strain the working shellac solution <\/strong>through layers of cloth to remove any particles of dirt or organic material.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Evaluate flake color<\/strong> when in liquid, variation in flake thickness from production batches can make a thinner flake look lighter in tone.
